Community Ofrenda at Austin Memorial Library
Austin Memorial Library invites the community to participate in our Community Ofrenda in observance of Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.
The Community Ofrenda will be displayed at the library from October 26 through October 29, 2026. Everyone is welcome to visit, learn about this meaningful tradition, and join us in celebrating the lives and memories of the people and pets who remain in our hearts.
What Is Día de los Muertos?
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican tradition honoring and remembering loved ones who have died. It is commonly observed on November 1 and 2.
Rather than focusing only on grief, Día de los Muertos celebrates the lives, memories, and lasting connections of those who have passed away. Although some of its imagery may appear similar, Día de los Muertos is not the same as Halloween.
What Is an Ofrenda?
An Ofrenda is a memorial display or altar created to honor deceased family members, friends, community members, and beloved pets. The word Ofrenda means “offering” in Spanish.
Ofrendas may include:
- Photographs and names
- Candles or decorative lights
- Marigolds and other flowers
- Favorite foods or meaningful objects
- Artwork, written memories, and personal messages
- Papel picado, or colorful cut-paper decorations
- Symbolic items such as water, salt, and bread
Participate in Our Community Ofrenda
A community Ofrenda allows many people to contribute to one shared memorial. Visitors may honor a person or pet who has died by contributing:
- A copy of a photograph
- The person’s or pet’s name
- A written memory or memory card
- A paper marigold
- A pet paw print
- A drawing or other artwork
Please do not bring original or irreplaceable photographs, valuable possessions, food, candles, or open flames. Items contributed to the display should be copies or objects that can be safely displayed in a public space.
Participation is optional. Visitors do not have to practice the tradition personally to respectfully view the Community Ofrenda and learn about its cultural significance.
